This is a modern version of a vanitas painting, (it's supposed to be all wilted and wrinkled). I finished this last year-I can't even remember how many photographs are composited here. Hope you like it.

Canon 30d: back light through glass

I'm trying to do more of this; a painting smushed together with a photograph. This came out looking more like a photogram, though. It just kind of took on it's own life.

Panoramic view stitched together on the computer. If you look closely, it seems like there is a 'war of the trees' going on. The lighted trees are all lined up against the black tree with the cloud over it. Even the battle ship is pointing guns at it.

Okay, this might need a little explanation. The original idea was to express how cringing it is to wear high heels, even if they are social convention. Consequently, they don't make Barbie's feet high-heel shaped any more. They now have flat feet- ah that's progress!

When I was shooting this project, I set up next to a wall of windows and waited for the sunlight to fall on the pearls. Then, I bracketed for about 4 stops, since I was shooting film, not digital.

Colors, patterns, and shapes. The near complements of deep red and teal green really give emphasis to the oddball, yellow.

I like this shot because the reflections and the lily pads are such abstract shapes; you might not be able to tell what is going on if the person wasn't there to give it scale.

This is an outtake of one of my portrait assingments taken earlier this year. We were just using up film at the end of the shoot and she was tired of smiling. When I told her she didn't have to smile, this is what happened.

This shot was modeled after the concepts of fine art photographer Zeke Berman. In his black and white work he plays with the perspective of your eyes. The rectangle was shaped to look upright, but is actually laying flat on the table, as revealed by the strings.

The top picture displays how I lit the shot. By "painting with light", or popping the flash multiple times in various positions over a long shutter speed, you can tailor the shadows, fill, softness, and spread of the light over the scene.

This shot was taken for my photo illustration class. I thought it would be fun to capture the odd little organic shapes of chinese take out. Also, here are some of the effects you can get when you paint with light. You can make certain areas glow and tone down others.

This assignment was to shoot some baked goods on 4x5 chrome. I choose these sugar cookies and shot them with light coming from a large bay window and a specular reflector for fill light.
